Bonuses are taxed as employment income in the UK. This calculator shows exactly how much of your bonus you will keep after income tax and National Insurance deductions, based on your salary and the 2026/27 tax year.
How It Works
Your bonus is added to your annual salary and taxed at your marginal rate.
Example: If your salary is £40,000 and you receive a £5,000 bonus:
- Your total income = £45,000
- The £5,000 bonus falls entirely in the basic rate band (20%)
- Basic rate income tax on bonus: £1,000
- National Insurance on bonus (8%): £400
- Net bonus received: £3,600
If your salary + bonus pushes you into the higher rate band (above £50,270), part of the bonus will be taxed at 40%.
